The following sites of cultural and historic interest will be visited during this excursion.
Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias
This “city” is full of architectural masterpieces. It is built in a old river bed and the architecture reflects that with all the water pools around the buildings. The city is dedicated to the arts and to science, with a science museum, an IMAX, an aquarium and a music hall. It was designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. Calatrava is a native of Valencia and a world renowned architect who ́s creations can be found all over the world and one of his newest buildings will be the transport hub in the world trade center in NYC.
During our day trip to Valencia we will take a walking tour around the complex to admire the architectural wonder.
Visit to the central market, with all its commercial activity in its different sections, fruits, vegetables, meats and fish. The building is from the beginning of the 20th century in the modernist style. On the other side of the street we will visit the Lonja de la seda (Patrimony of Humanity and one of the few gothic civil buildings from the 15th century), which is the historic site where all textile and silk commercial activity in the area was performed and where merchants form all over Europe converge since Valencia and his port in the 15th century were the commercial capital of the Mediterranean.
Walking tour of the old city
During this tour we walk through the Carmen (the medieval city) with the old city towers, the Cathedral, Museo catedralicio and Capilla del Santo Cáliz, where it is through, and said in popular belief that the Holy Grail is preserved. We will also visit the Plaza de la Virgen and the Palacio de los Borjas, which is the current Regional Parlament of the Comunidad Valenciana, made in a renaissance style.
Visita a la Alboraya
Alboraya is a town on the outskirts of the city, which is the birth place of Spanish Horchata, a delicious drink made from a root vegetable typical from the region. In Alboraya we will also visit the workshop-‐store of Lladró.
Visit to the Museum of Bellas Artes and the IVAM.
Bellas Artes is a museum of art from the16 and 17th century and the IVAM is a contemporary art museum.
On our trip back to Alicante we will pass by the Albufera, one of the most picturesque natural parks in the Mediterranean.
